Bibliotheksstipendium für Autorinnen und Autoren - Library Scholarship for Authors

Bibliotheken bewahren nicht nur Literatur – Bibliotheken können auch zu Literatur inspirieren. Das Recherchestipendium richtet sich an Autor:innen aller literarischen Gattungen, die sich in der Recherchephase ihrer literarischen Projekte mit Beständen der Forschungsbibliothek Gotha auseinandersetzen möchten.

Die Forschungsbibliothek Gotha ist eine der bedeutendsten historischen Bibliotheken im deutschsprachigen Raum. Sie ist Teil der auf Schloss Friedenstein vereinten Sammlungen des 1640 bis 1825 bestehenden Herzoghauses Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg und der zwischen 1826 und 1945 in Gotha gesammelten Bestände des Herzoghauses Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha.

Der Kern ihrer Bestände ist die hervorragende Sammlung von Handschriften, Autographen und Nachlässen zur Kulturgeschichte des Protestantismus in der Frühen Neuzeit. Die Sammlung von etwa 3.500 orientalischen Handschriften zählt zu den größten ihrer Art in Deutschland. Die Sammlung Perthes umfasst einzigartiges Quellenmaterial zur Entwicklung der Kartographie und der Geographie im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Die Bibliothek bewahrt daneben eine bedeutende Briefsammlung deutscher Auswanderer nach Amerika aus dem 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert. Für literarische Entdeckungen geeignet sind außerdem die reichen Bestände an Reiseliteratur, der Nachlass des Science-Fiction-Autors Kurd Laßwitz oder das in Gotha intensiv erforschte Gebiet des Illuminatenordens – ebenso wie die bildungsgeschichtlichen und naturkundlichen Quellen, die von Astronomie, Alchemie bis hin zur Botanik reichen.

Die Bewerbung sollte die für die literarische Arbeit relevanten Bestände der Forschungsbibliothek benennen. Das Stipendium

Die Vergabe des Stipendiums erfolgt für ein herausragendes künstlerisches Vorhaben, das sich durch außergewöhnliche Qualität und Eigenständigkeit auszeichnet. Voraussetzung für eine Bewerbung ist ein konkretes Recherchevorhaben in den Beständen der Gothaer Forschungsbibliothek. Mindestens eine literarische Veröffentlichung in einem anerkannten Publikumsverlag muss bei der Bewerbung vorgewiesen werden können.

Das Bibliotheksstipendium wird für die Dauer von einem Monat ausgereicht und ist mit 1.500 Euro dotiert. Für Stipendiat:innen mit Kindern (bis einschl. 18 Jahre) wird ein einmaliger Familienzuschlag in Höhe von 100 Euro gewährt. Als Nachweis gilt die Geburtsurkunde. Eine Unterkunft im Gästehaus des Forschungszentrums Gotha (Wohneinheit mit eigenem Bad und Küche) wird für die Dauer des Aufenthalts zur Verfügung gestellt. Das Bibliotheksstipendium kann für eine Person nur einmalig vergeben werden. Ein Bestandteil der Förderung ist eine öffentliche Präsentation des Projekts im Rahmen einer Veranstaltung in Gotha. Pro Person kann für das gleiche Förderjahr nur ein Stipendium bei der Kulturstiftung Thüringen gewährt werden.

Das Stipendium ist ausgeschlossen, wenn

• im selben Zeitraum ein anderes Stipendium (unabhängig vom Vorhaben) in Anspruch genommen wird
• die/der Bewerber:in zum Zeitpunkt der Bewerbung an einer Hochschule immatrikuliert ist oder das Vorhaben im Rahmen einer Ausbildung oder zum Zwecke der wissenschaftlichen Qualifizierung erbracht wird.

Bewerbungsunterlagen

Für die Bewerbung erforderlich sind:

• Beschreibung des Vorhabens, max. 2 Normseiten,
• Angaben zu den für die literarische Arbeit relevanten Bestände der Gothaer Forschungsbibliothek,
• Textprobe des geplanten Vorhabens, max. 10 Normseiten als PDF oder
  Auszug aus einem bereits erschienen Werk, max. 10 Normseiten als PDF,
• Tabellarischer Lebenslauf (Angaben zum Studium und Ausbildung) und Angaben zum künstlerischen Werdegang (inkl. Bibliografie mit Verlagsangabe), als PDF, max. 3 DIN-A-4-Seiten,
• Angaben zum gewünschten Aufenthaltszeitraum bis 31. Dezember des Förderjahres,
• Geburtsurkunde des Kindes / der Kinder, sofern unter 18 Jahren.

Nur Bewerbungen, die die genannten Voraussetzungen erfüllen und den geforderten Umfang nicht überschreiten, werden der Jury vorgelegt.

Auf die Gewährung einer Förderung besteht kein Rechtsanspruch. Die Förderungen werden im Rahmen der verfügbaren Haushaltsmittel bewilligt.

Libraries not only preserve literature, they can also inspire it. The research grant is aimed at authors of all literary genres who wish to engage with the holdings of the Gotha Research Library during the research phase of their literary projects.

The Gotha Research Library is one of the most important historical libraries in the German-speaking world. It is part of the collections of the Ducal House of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, which existed from 1640 to 1825, and the holdings of the Ducal House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, which were collected in Gotha between 1826 and 1945, both of which are housed in Friedenstein Castle.

The core of its holdings is the outstanding collection of manuscripts, autographs, and estates relating to the cultural history of Protestantism in the early modern period. The collection of approximately 3,500 Oriental manuscripts is one of the largest of its kind in Germany.

The Perthes Collection comprises unique source material on the development of cartography and geography in the 19th and 20th centuries. The library also holds an important collection of letters written by German emigrants to America in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rich holdings of travel literature, the estate of science fiction author Kurd Laßwitz, and the area of the Illuminati Order, which has been intensively researched in Gotha, are also suitable for literary discoveries, as are the educational history and natural history sources, which range from astronomy and alchemy to botany.

The scholarship

The scholarship is awarded for an outstanding artistic project that is characterized by exceptional quality and originality. A prerequisite for application is a specific research project in the holdings of the Gotha Research Library. At least one literary publication by a recognized publisher must be presented with the application.

The library scholarship is awarded for a period of one month and is endowed with 1,500 euros. Scholarship holders with children (up to and including 18 years of age) are granted a one-time family allowance of 100 euros. The birth certificate serves as proof. Accommodation in the guest house of the Gotha Research Center (living unit with private bathroom and kitchen) is provided for the duration of the stay. The library scholarship can only be awarded once per person. Part of the funding is a public presentation of the project at an event in Gotha. Only one scholarship per person can be awarded by the Thuringian Cultural Foundation for the same funding year.

The scholarship is excluded if

• another scholarship (regardless of the project) is being used during the same period
• the applicant is enrolled at a university at the time of application, or the project is being carried out as part of a training program or for the purpose of academic qualification.

The following are required for the application:

• Description of the project, max. 2 standard pages,
• Information on the holdings of the Gotha Research Library relevant to the literary work,
• Text sample of the planned project, max. 10 standard pages as a PDF or excerpt from a previously published work, max. 10 standard pages as a PDF,
• Tabular curriculum vitae (details of studies and training) and details of artistic career (including bibliography with publisher details), as a PDF, max. 3 DIN A4 pages,
• Details of the desired period of stay until December 31 of the funding year,
• If applicable, birth certificate(s) of the child/children, if under 18 years of age.

Only applications that meet the above requirements and do not exceed the required length will be submitted to the jury.
